SOPACDI is an organization of more than 5,600 farmers, roughly 20 percent of whom are women, located near Lake Kivu in D.R. Congo. Each farmer has around 2 hectares of land & cherries go to SOPACDI washing station through 10 collection subgroups.
Joachim Munganga founded SOPACDI in 2003 providing market access to the growers in these remote highlands. Previously farmers were forced to barter their coffee for food, clothing & necessities. The cooperative was the first to achieve Fair Trade certification in D.R. Congo, & the coffee also carries organic certification. Members of the cooperative represent several different ethnic groups, speaking Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, & Kihavu. many of the women members are widows of the ongoing civil war.
