Finca El Arcangel is a 10 hectare farm owned by the Rodriquez family of AGRICAFE. They now have 8 farms in Caranavi region & 5 farms in Samaipata region including, Finca El Arcangel. The farm is located in the Bolinda community, outside of the town of Caranavi where the Rodriguez wet mill Buena Vista is situated.
The 4 hectare farm is planted with red & yellow caturra & catuai with native citrus, papaya & avocado shade trees. Arcangel was rehabilitated in 2015 with new varietals & their first harvest was 2017.
Humidity & heavy rainfall in Caranavi has pushed the mill into using mechanical air driers; temperature controlled boxes using warm air to dry the coffee consistently. The driers are turned off during the night to rest the coffee & regulate moisture content.
Caturra was developed by the Alcides Carvalho Coffee Center of the IAC, Instituto Agronomico of the Sao Paulo State in Brazil. In 1937, IAC received seed samples of unknown genetic materials which were confirmed as the first naturally occurring coffee mutation derived from Brazilian red bourbon arabica which in turn forms the foundation of all of today’s red & yellow caturra cultivars.
